I met Marc and Tony at Virgin Records tonight to see Sarah Vowell. She read from her latest book, or tried to, as all the televisions and speakers in the store were playing a bonus feature from the Incredibles dvd with the volume cranked up, so that her voice (she played Violet) was already echoing off the walls before she got to the microphone. After a minute or so, at her request, ("if somebody could get me to stop talking?") they turned off the background noise. Then the microphone wouldn't work. It was, as Kimi would say, a karaoke moment. The kind of thing that worries me very much. But it all worked out. Sort of. Sarah Vowell is smart and funny and interesting. She's also adept at fielding demented questions from over-eager readers, like one guy who asked if she "ever dated Conan O'Brian", and about a dozen people who asked about The Incredibles. I mean, I love that movie, but she was reading from her book, guys! That's cool too!
I bought a copy of Assassination Vacation and got it signed. I haven't done that since I was a kid.
Now I go back to sleep.

"What would your book be like if Violet from The Incredibles wrote it?"
"What was it like to work with Holly Hunter/other famous people?"
"Do you think that Violet from The Incredibles would go out with Conan?"
