Never mind Pluto

I had my second Oceanography class today, and actually liked it. It was about the Big Bang. I'd never had anyone really explain the Big Bang theory to me before. I was impressed. Scientists impress the hell out of me. I could never do what they do, my brain doesn't work like that. We looked at a photograph of a frozen lake on Mars. A frozen Martian lake! Wow! And there might be life under the ice on Europa, a moon of Jupiter! Gee whiz! It made me want to read the Martian Chronicles. I love the word "Martian", but what would we call creatures from Europa? European? Seriously. This worries me probably more than it should. Maybe they could be Europatian.

After class I went to the UBC bookstore, which in early September is an insane hell, and stood in line for fifteen minutes to buy a bunch of books I don't actually need. There was a display of Pocket Penguins that drove me crazy with delight. I bought three of them. Only $4.00 each! By today's standards, that's almost cheap!

The traffic on the way home was insane (uPass, I know, I KNOW), and I was starving. I phoned my mum from the car and she was starving too, so we met at the White Spot and gorged ourselves on burgers and coleslaw. Now I feel taut and round and want to get in bed and read all night. Which I may well do.

I like how "Martian" is "Marian" with a "t" stuck exactly in the middle.

What were the pocket penguins?

George Orwell: In Defense of English Cooking, The Country of the Blind by H.G. Wells, and one by Nick Hornby called Otherwise Pandemonium. Judging by the Penguin.uk website, the selection they had at UBC bookstore wasn't great, only 10 or 15 books.

Ooowee, triple-o. Although, White Spot in general is sort of upsetting, now, what with the aspirations beyond its station. All it really needs is that luscious mix of relish and mayonnaise. Hchom.

And please, let's talk more about these pocket penguins. Mostly because the image I get is of a new celebrity pet craze: the pocket penguin. Which I would approve of, should it catch on (celebrity readers take note!)

I'm confused. More than usual, that is. Why does one study the Big Bang Theory in oceanography?

I think because we're starting off with how the oceans formed, which is how the planet formed, which is how the universe formed, which is the big bang theory? I actually don't know why he's going that far back, but I approve, because otherwise I'd be even more lost than I already am.

Sachi - White Spot is upsetting now, I agree, with the whole sports bar/wannabe Feenies thing. But if you ignore the televsions above the bar and the wine list, and just focus on the Burger, it's still comforting. I only wish they'd bring back the mysterious live Chicken logo, with the knife and the fork. I loved that.

POCKET PENGUIN. UM UM?!

In Defense of English Cooking?! Sounds like a gem.

Now you've also got me really worrying about European vs. Europatian.

It's a serious problem.
